Historical Museum & Indian Village
The Historical Museum & Indian Village of Grifton features displays covering the areas plants, animals, geology, and natural history. Enjoy Civil War exhibits, and explore the history of the Tuscarora Indians of Eastern North Carolina in the Tuscarora room and across the street from the museum at the Tuscarora Catechna Indian Village. The museum also features information about John Lawson, North Carolina’s first Surveyor General and author of The History of Carolina, a detailed account of his 600 mile exploration through the Carolina Colony from Charleston to the Pamlico Sound. Although Lawson was an advocate of Native Americans, Lawson was captured and executed near Catechna by the Tuscarora during the Tuscarora War. Grifton and the surrounding community celebrate his contribution to the founding of North Carolina each fall during the John Lawson Legacy Days festival on the banks of Contentnea Creek.
