The Public Utilities Department is responsible for providing water and sewer service and maintenance, town street and sidewalk maintenance and sign installation, storm water management, mosquito control, park facility management, and overall maintenance of publicly owned property.

Locate

The Town of Grifton Public Utilities Department is located on Creekshore Drive, next to the Grifton Civic Center and Museum.

The regular operating hours are Monday through Thursday from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM and Friday from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM.

You can call the department by dialing (252) 524-5168 during normal operating hours and after-hour emergencies can be reported to the Grifton Police Department by dialing (252) 524-4161.

Garbage

The Town of Grifton contracts solid waste management to Waste Industries, Inc. who is responsible for the collection of solid waste and recycling. There are certain limitations as to what is picked up by Waste Industries, these are addressed below.

Waste Industries provides one roll-out container for solid waste collection per each residential unit. Waste Industries is not responsible for picking up any solid waste that is not in the container. If you need an additional roll-out container, please contact the Grifton Town Hall, (252) 524-5168. There will be an additional charge of $5.00 per month added to your utility bill.

Recycling

All materials to be recycled must be put in the provided recycling container. Please make an effort to clean out all materials before placing them in the recycling container. Materials that can be recycled include:

  • Newspapers (with inserts)
  • Glass food and beverage containers (clear, brown, and green colors)
  • Aluminum and bi-metal cans
  • Plastic beverage containers (HDPE #2 and PETE #1)

Yard

The Town of Grifton provides the pick up of yard waste materials such as grass clippings, pine combs, tree branches and other yard waste. All of the materials, except tree limbs, must be in bags and placed on the street for pick up. The Town will not be responsible for picking up any materials not bagged. Tree branches that are no larger than 4 feet in length and 6 inches in diameter will also be collected. Yard waste will not be collected if it is mixed with any household garbage or if it contains pet feces.

Sewer

The Town of Grifton operates a wastewater collection system under permit WQCS00247, issued by the ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT COMMISSION, N.C. DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT AND NATURAL RESOURCES. This system consists of approximately 20 linear miles of gravity sewer lines, 6.4 linear miles of force mains, 10 duplex and 6 simplex pump stations, and all associated piping, valves, and appurtenances necessary to operate a wastewater collection system for the Town of Grifton.

Apply

Application fees are $150.00 and must be submitted along with valid picture identification at the time service is requested. Service must be requested prior to 30 minutes before closing time for same day completion. Cash, Check and Money Order are accepted.
